Analysis Shows Fulfillment from Distribution Centers is More Profitable

An analysis from the European Journal of Operational Research concluded that direct-to-consumer and distribution center fulfillment tended to be more profitable than store-based fulfillment. The study found that only 30-35% of logistics costs were spent on distribution-based fulfillment, as opposed to 45% for store fulfillment.

WMS Customized for Visually Impaired Warehouse Workers

Zebra Technologies partnered with CSSI to implement a customized WMS solution for North Central Sight Services (NCCS) optimized for their 29 visually impaired workers. The switch from a manual process to an automated one increased worker productivity and picking accuracy, and the customizations including large characters, color coding and voice-directed picking improved user experience.

Trucking Cuts Jobs While Warehousing Adds Workers

Truckers cut 4,200 jobs in September, while warehousing and storage businesses added 3,400 workers to prepare for the holiday season. The trucking market is continuing to level off following fleet expansions last year, while retail and e-commerce logistics employers are preparing for an increase in holiday sales.
